ABOUT SHIRLEY J. SANDERSON - STEPHENS:
I became aware of clay and the process of making pottery in second grade. My mother who taught school, brought home some clay and I made my first pot. Although it would be easy to say that I was hooked at that time in my life, I always loved the feel of clay squishing through my hands and seeing the resulting organic forms after its manipulation. I find a great deal of serenity while I’m working clay in my studio. For me pottery seems to be about movement and cadence and spirit. I really love making pottery, for it is what I call functional art. The landscape patterns in my work is from the inspiration I feel by living in such a beautiful place which Wyoming provides.
I was born in Texas, lived there until I was 1, then moved to Riverton, WY. I attended the University of WY., and DePaul University in Chicago. Although I do not have a college degree (need to complete one paper for DePaul University) I find my art is what fulfills me, perhaps more than writing the required Major Piece of Work for DePaul.
